Step Afrika!
Our first #LightingtheWay post for the month showcases the work of the nonprofit professional dance company Step Afrika!
Step Afrika! performances blend percussive dance styles practiced by historically African American fraternities and sororities, traditional African dances, and an array of contemporary dance forms, integrated with songs, storytelling, humor and audience participation. The organization is also dedicated to cultural preservation and exchange, noting the significance of traditional arts across the globe.
Dedicated to bringing the art form to as many people as possible, Step Afrika! serves thousands of students through the organization’s award-winning arts education programming and reaches tens of thousands of Americans each year through a 50-city tour of colleges and theaters. Since the organization launched in 1994, stepping has also evolved into one of America’s cultural exports. Step Afrika! tours globally, spreading their light to more than 60 countries around the world.
